GLADWIN CONSERVATION DISTRICT RECEIVES NACD TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE GRANT
GLADWIN, MICHIGAN – Today, the Gladwin Conservation District in Gladwin County, Michigan, announced it was awarded a technical assistance grant from the National Association of Conservation Districts (NACD).
“We are incredibly grateful to be awarded these grant funds from NACD. Getting assistance through this grant will allow us to finally meet our current demands while also lifting the ceiling for the positive impact we can provide to landowners in Gladwin and Clare Counties as well as the Saginaw Bay Watershed.”, says Tristan Hewitt, Executive Director for the Gladwin Conservation District.
This is the third year of the NACD technical assistance grant program, which was created with funds from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) to help increase staffing at the field level and provide conservation services to farmers, ranchers and local communities across the U.S.
NRCS programming has several practices that help alleviate one of the most pressing issues to this watershed - agricultural non-point source pollution. With the awarded grant funds, the Gladwin Conservation District plans to spread awareness about NRCS programming and how it can help landowners achieve their personal goals while addressing their resource concerns. They also plan to assist NRCS in getting conservation plans completed and landowners enrolled in programming. The district understands that maximizing the potential of this programming can have immediate impacts on the economic and ecological health of Gladwin and Clare Counties and the greater watershed.
“Since 2018, NACD and NRCS have worked together to increase staffing at the field level for conservation districts,” NACD President Tim Palmer said. “This increased technical capacity helps to improve conservation services to farmers, ranchers and local communities across the nation.”
To date in 2020, NACD and NRCS have awarded $15 million in technical assistance grants. Since the program’s inception, NACD has funded technical assistance in all 50 states and three U.S. territories.
“Even in this time of a national emergency, farmers and ranchers have conservation concerns that need to be addressed,” Palmer said. “NACD is proud to provide funding to America’s conservation districts and allow for more boots on the ground, providing our growers with support for their individual landscapes and resource concerns.”
