Last month, a team of outstanding Michigan students represented our state at the National Conservation Foundation (NCF) Envirothon in Calgary, Alberta, Canada! Competing against teams from across the United States, Canada, and China, these Natural Resources students demonstrated their skills and knowledge in wildlife, forestry, soil and land use, and aquatic ecology. They also presented a comprehensive solution to a real-world scenario on boreal forest management and climate change.

Their advisor, Carley Kratz, shared:

“Our Natural Resources students represented Michigan at the National Conservation Foundation Envirothon in Calgary, Alberta, Canada! Students demonstrated their skills and knowledge in wildlife, forestry, soil & land use, and aquatic ecology. They also presented a solution to a real-world scenario on boreal forest management and climate change. The students didn’t win any prizes, but they won at life. They displayed amazing cooperation and teamwork and had the most positive attitude of any teams there. They made life-long memories with each other and with students from around North America and China.”

While they may not have brought home a trophy, this group brought something even more valuable, a spirit of collaboration, resilience, and curiosity that embodies the very heart of conservation education. Their experience in Calgary was filled with learning, laughter, and connections that will last a lifetime.

What Is Envirothon?

Envirothon is North America’s largest environmental education competition, designed to engage high school students in hands-on learning about natural resource conservation. Teams work together throughout the year to deepen their understanding of ecology, forestry, soil science, and water quality, culminating in a regional and state-level competition.

The winning team from each state or province advances to the NCF Envirothon, where they tackle a complex environmental problem and present innovative solutions to a panel of judges. Through this experience, students not only gain technical knowledge but also build leadership, teamwork, and public speaking skills, preparing them to become the next generation of conservation leaders.
