Accounting Specialist

Full-Time | Remote (Michigan-based preferred) | Salary: $70,000–$80,000 | Exempt

The Michigan Association of Conservation Districts (MACD) is seeking an Accounting Specialist to serve as a key financial support resource for the organization and the Conservation Districts that it serves. This is a permanent, full-time position responsible for MACD's day-to-day accounting operations, supporting the Executive Director on financial reporting and grant compliance, and serving as a trusted financial resource for our statewide network of 75 Conservation District members.

As part of a small but mighty team, the ideal candidate is a detail-oriented financial professional who is comfortable working independently in a remote environment. If you thrive in a mission-driven nonprofit setting and bring experience navigating the intersection of nonprofit, government, and grant-funded finance, we want to hear from you. This position reports directly to the Executive Director and is supported by quarterly reviews with an external accounting firm.

MACD administers grants from federal, state, and foundation sources. This role offers a meaningful opportunity to apply your financial expertise in direct service to Michigan's conservation community and protecting Michigan’s unique natural resources.

Key Responsibilities

Bookkeeping & Day-to-Day Finance

  • Manage all day-to-day bookkeeping, including accounts payable and receivable, bank reconciliations, and general ledger maintenance.
  • Process payroll and maintain organized, audit-ready financial records.
  • Utilize MACD's accounting systems, including QuickBooks Online.

Grant Financial Support

  • Support the Executive Director in preparing and submitting financial reports required by grant funders, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Track grant expenditures and budgets, flagging variances and compliance considerations for the Executive Director.
  • Assist with grant reimbursement processes and coordinate with program staff, volunteers, and committees on documentation of allowable costs.

Reporting & Budgeting

  • Develop and present financial reports for Finance Committee meetings, including monthly and year-to-date statements.
  • Coordinate with the Executive Director throughout the annual budgeting process.
  • Provide financial analysis and projections to support organizational decision-making.

Technical Assistance & Member Support

A meaningful part of this role is serving as a financial resource across MACD's statewide network of Conservation Districts. You'll be the go-to accounting resource for member districts navigating accounting questions, compliance challenges, and best practices.

  • Respond to financial and accounting questions from member Conservation Districts, providing practical, accessible guidance.
  • Deliver occasional workshops, webinars, or trainings to build financial capacity across the member network.
  • Develop and share tools, templates, and best practices to support member districts' financial operations.
  • Review member financial reports or provide consultative support as needed.

  • Experience with nonprofit financial management, including demonstrated experience with grant financial reporting, preferably with government or foundation grants.
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks Online and Google Drive
  • Strong organizational skills and close attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial audiences, including member organizations and volunteers.
  • Comfort working independently in a fully remote environment.
  • Michigan-based candidates required.

Additionally Preferred

  • Familiarity with QuickBooks Desktop.
  • Experience working with Conservation Districts, local government entities, or similar membership-based organizations.
  • Proficiency with Monday.com or similar task management tools, and Zeffy or other donation platforms.

  • Familiarity with Michigan-specific nonprofit or government financial regulations.
  • Experience providing financial training, coaching, or technical assistance to member organizations or staff.
  • Experience in completing a single audit.

Benefits

  • Fully remote work within the state of Michigan.
  • Salary range of $70,000–$80,000 based on skills and experience.
