Finance and Accounting Manager

Full-Time | Remote (Michigan-based preferred) | Salary: $75,000–$85,000 | Exempt

About the Role

The Michigan Association of Conservation Districts (MACD) is seeking a Finance & Accounting Manager to lead the organization's day-to-day financial operations. This is a permanent, full-time position that plays a key part in maintaining MACD's fiscal health, supporting grant compliance, and providing financial guidance to both internal leadership and our statewide network of Conservation District members.

As part of a small, but mighty team, the ideal candidate is a detail-oriented financial professional who is comfortable working independently in a remote environment. If you thrive in a mission-driven nonprofit setting, and bring experience navigating the intersection of nonprofit, government, and grant-funded finance, you are a great fit. This position reports directly to the Executive Director and is supported by quarterly reviews with an external accounting firm.

Key Responsibilities

Bookkeeping & Day-to-Day Finance

  • Manage all day-to-day bookkeeping, including accounts payable and receivable, bank reconciliations, and general ledger maintenance, process payroll, and maintain organized, audit-ready financial records.

Grant Financial Management

  • Prepare and submit financial reports required by grant funders, ensuring accuracy and timeliness.
  • Track grant expenditures and budgets to ensure compliance with award terms.
  • Support grant reimbursement processes and coordinate with program staff on allowable costs.

Reporting & Budgeting

  • Develop and present financial reports for Finance Committee meetings, including monthly and year-to-date statements.
  • Lead the annual budgeting process in collaboration with the Executive Director and relevant staff.
  • Provide financial analysis and projections to support organizational decision-making.

Member Services

  • Provide financial guidance and support to MACD's Conservation District members as needed.
  • Share tools, templates, or best practices to support member Conservation Districts' financial operations.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience with nonprofit financial management and demonstrated experience with grant financial reporting, preferably with government or foundation grants.
  • Proficiency with QuickBooks Online and Quickbooks Desktop, Google Drive, and Bill.com
  • Strong organizational skills and close attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate financial information clearly to non-financial audiences.
  • Comfort working independently in a fully remote environment.

Preferred

  • Experience working with Conservation Districts, local government entities, or similar organizations.
  • Proficiency with Monday.com or other similar task management and team collaboration tools, and Zeffy or other donation platforms.
  • Familiarity with Michigan-specific nonprofit or government financial regulations.
  • Experience providing financial training, coaching, or technical assistance to member organizations or staff.
  • Michigan-based candidates strongly preferred.
  • Experience with completing a single audit.
